- Widespread in Naples and Campania, this is not a single criminal organization, but a collection of groups (families) which often fight each other for control of criminal activities. It goes back to the 16th century and has practised extortion for centuries, blackmailing small businesses in Naples. After World War II, and above all in the 1980s, it began to control drug dealing and arms trafficking, prostitution and the allocation of public contracts, developing links with politicians and gaining ever-increasing control over the Naples area.

- This “global food” was for centuries a speciality only known in the city of Naples, and it was believed that it could not be appreciated outside that city. From medieval times pizze (flattened pieces of bread dough) were eaten in Naples with garlic and lard or cheese and basil, or little fish. The modern pizza with tomato first appeared at the end of the 18th century. The first pizzeria was opened in Naples around 1830 (before that pizza was sold and eaten in the street). In 1889 the pizzaiolo (pizza maker) Raffaele Esposito prepared a pizza for Queen Margherita, the wife of King Umberto I of Italy, with tomato, mozzarella and a few basil leaves (red, white and green, the colours of the Italian flag). This type of pizza, now the most popular one in the world, has been called the pizza margherita ever since.

- The main Italian dailies are La Repubblica and Il Corriere della Sera. Other important daily newspapers are linked to particular cities, for example La Stampa (Turin), La Nazione (Florence), Il Messaggero (Rome), Il Mattino (Naples), while some are openly ideological, such as Il Manifesto (left-wing), L'Avvenire (Catholic) or Il Giornale (conservative). The daily financial paper is il Sole 24 ore. Italian daily papers have, for some years, published weekly colour supplements on travel, health, showbusiness, fashion, etc and offer “packages” with books, music CDs, DVDs or videos at a good price.

- (or Presepio) The model of the nativity and the adoration of the Magi with statues made of wood or terracotta against a painted background goes back to the 13th-14th century in Tuscany. However, the development of extravagant nativities created in churches, full of scenes of everyday life that were reproduced in amazing detail in terms of the setting and the people, the clothes and the work tools, took place primarily in Naples in the 1700s and 1800s, between the Baroque and the Rococo periods. The 19th century saw the spread of the custom of families making a nativity scene in their own home for the Christmas period, with terracotta, chalk or papier-mâché figures. In the last few decades this practice has become less popular because of the growth in the use of the Northern European Christmas tree.
