Accademia della Crusca Info
-
- This was founded in Florence in 1583, with the aim of asserting the linguistic supremacy of literary Florentine (of separating pure language, the “flour”, from incorrect language, the “bran” or crusca). From 1612 it published the “Dictionary of the Academicians of La Crusca”, which became a model for similar works in other major European languages. It went through various editions right up until 1923. The Academy has stayed in operation to the present day (apart from a single interruption from 1783 to 1811). It is now based in the Villa di Castello, near Florence, and is a centre for linguistic, philological and lexicographical research. It does not fulfil a similar role of setting standards and supervising the language to that of the Académie Française or the Real Academia in Spain.
