Viele Jahre war es als Militärgefängnis Symbol der Unterdrückung durch das Franco-Regime. 1960 wurde das Castell de Montjuïc der Stadt übergeben.
Heute beherbergt es das militärhistorische Museum und ist eine beliebte Sehenswürdigkeit auf dem Montjuïc.
