Since 2011, he has worked as a freelance director and screenwriter, as well as a member of staff and lecturer at the Chemnitzer Filmwerkstatt.
Olaf Held has been awarded numerous prizes for his films, including the FILMFEST DRESDEN Golden Horseman for "Vatertag", the main prize in the international competition at the Prague Short Film Festival for "Daheim", as well as the 2013 German Short Film Prize in Gold for "Short Film".
