Mit einer Vielfalt an innovativen und multidisziplinären Techniken, die noch nie in der Vogel- navigationsforschung genutzt wurde, gelang es Prof. Mouritsen und seiner internationalen Arbeits- gruppe, vier Hirnareale zu identifizieren, mit denen die Vögel das Erdmagnetfeld auf zweierlei Weise wahrnehmen können :
Zwei Areale bearbeiten lichtabhängige Informationen vom Auge, mit denen die Vögel die Kompassrichtung des Magnetfelds visuell wahrnehmen.
Die anderen beiden Areale sind über Nervenbahnen mit dem oberen Teil des Schnabels verbunden, wo ein Magnetsensor aus eisenmineralhaltigen Kristallstrukturen vermutet wird.
