Wie auch der neue Personalausweis dem deutschen Bürger, wird der elektronische Aufenthaltstitel dem ausländischen Mitbürger die Möglichkeiten der Online-Kommunikation mit Behörden und Verwaltungen eröffnen und so helfen, Zeit und Kosten zu sparen.
Die Nutzung der Online-Ausweisfunktionen ( elektronischer Identitätsnachweis und elektronische Unterschriftsfunktion ) ist freiwillig und kann auf Wunsch ein- beziehungsweise ausgeschaltet werden .
Das neue Dokument wird durch die Bundesdruckerei GmbH in Berlin produziert.
