Das Europäische Patentamt gehört dem erlauchten Kreis ebenso an wie seit 2006 das Nordische Patentinstitut.Österreich gehört zum PCT-Urgestein und ist seit 1979 auch internationale Prüfbehörde.
In seiner Funktion als internationale Recherche- und Prüfbehörde erstellt das Österreichische Patentamt jährlich über 1000 Prüfberichte, vor allem für Korea, Singapur, Indien, Brasilien und Südafrika.
