Ab 835 feierte die katholische Kirche das Allerheiligen-Fest nicht mehr am Pfingstsonntag, sondern am 1. November und gedachte an diesem Tag den Seelen der Verstorbenen.
So entstand auch der Name „Halloween“, denn es wird abgeleitet von der englischen Übersetzung “ALL HOLLOWS EVE” (evening, „Vorabend“ und hallow „Heiliger“).
