Ausgehend vom nachwachsenden Rohstoff Rapsöl wurden zwei Herstellungswege für biobasierte Grundstoffe für die chemische Industrie untersucht.
Am Fraunhofer IGB wurden die fermentative Umwandlung von Fettsäuren in Dicarbonsäuren inklusive der Stammentwicklung und die fermentative Bildung von 1,3-Propandiol aus dem Rohglycerin der Biodieselherstellung bearbeitet.

Dabei sollen konventionelle chemische Verfahren durch enzymatische und fermentative Prozesse ersetzt bzw. auf bio-kompatible Katalysatoren umgestellt werden.
In dem deutsch-indonesischen Gemeinschaftsvorhaben werden Palm, Jatropha und Süßhirse als Rohstoffe genutzt.
