Europol ist eine Agentur der Europäischen Union, deren Aufgabe die Förderung der Zusammenarbeit der Polizei- und Strafverfolgungsbehörden der Mitgliedstaaten ist.
Der Gedanke, ein Europäisches Polizeiamt zu schaffen, geht auf den Europäischen Rat von Luxemburg (Juni 1991) zurück.
Wie im Vertrag von Maastricht vorgesehen, nahm das Amt seine Arbeit im Januar 1994 als „Europol-Drogenstelle" auf.

The idea of a European Police Office was first raised at the Luxembourg European Council (June 1991).
Provision for the Office was made in the Treaty of Maastricht, and it began its activities in January 1994 as the Europol Drugs Unit (EDU).
