Im Jahr 1652 ging der Niederländer Jan van Riebeeck hier an Land, um für die Handelsschiffe der niederländischen Ostindien-Kompanie eine Versorgungsstation zu gründen, da sich hier die geschützte Bucht für einen Hafen anbot.
