Die Stadt hieß eigentlich Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, was soviel bedeutet wie « Die Marienkirche am Teich in der Nähe der weißen Haselnusssträucher ».
Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde sie umbenannt und bekam diesen Namen aus Werbegründen.
