In den tropischen Gefilden Nordamerikas trifft man auf eine reiche Artenvielfalt von Klapperschlangen ebenso wie in Afrika auf die der Bitis-Familie: von der gewöhnlichen Puffotter ( Bitis arietans ) bis zur Nashornviper ( Bitis nasicornis ) sind dort zahlreiche Vipernarten vertreten.
