Die Schulterhöhe des Deutschen Kleinspitzes beträgt 23 bis 29 cm.
Im Gegensatz zum Zwergspitz wurde er früher nur in den klassischen Farben schwarz, braun, weiß und orange rein gezüchtet, also ohne Einkreuzung anderer Farben.
