Die Phosphatgruppe (P) für die Phosphorylierung stammt aus dem Energiespeichermolekül ATP.

Die WissenschaftlerInnen konnten zeigen, dass das Archaeon nicht nur Methan oxidiert, sondern auch das Sulfat verbraucht und dabei ohne den bakteriellen Partner auskommt.
Allerdings nutzen sie dazu nicht die Enzymausstattung, wie sie andere bekannte sulfatreduzierende Mikroorganismen haben, sondern vermutlich einen anderen, bisher unbekannten Stoffwechselweg.

They show that the archaeon not only oxidizes methane but can also respire sulfate and does not necessarily need the bacterial partner.
It appears that the archaeon does not employ the common enzyme toolbox that other known sulfate-respiring microorganisms use, but relies on a different, unknown pathway.
