- During World War I, on 24th October 1917, Austrian and German troops unleashed a violent attack on the Italian front-line, near to the small town of Caporetto (nowadays known as Kobarid, in Slovenia), and broke through it. The Italian retreat was disorganized and frantic, with terrible losses. The place-name has entered into the collective memory and into Italian to mean a rout or total failure.
