Das Institut für Kartographie und Geoinformatik ( IKG ) hat seit 1970 einen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsschwerpunkt auf dem Gebiet der Erfassung, Auswertung und Darstellung topographischer Daten.
Als das für Forschung und Praxis wichtigstes Ergebnis kann das Topographische Auswerte-System Hannover ( TASH ) angesehen werden.
Das Programmsystem wird weiter entwickelt und gepflegt und dabei jeweils unterstützten Betriebssystemen ( z. Zt. Windows NT 4 und Windows 2000 ) angepasst.

The system approximates a plane described by a regular or irregular distribution of terrain points by a grid.
www.ikg.uni-hannover.deIm Falle der topographischen Aufnahme werden zusätzliche Angaben zur Punktart erfasst, die für die richtige morphologische Reliefmodellierung notwendig sind.
Die Strukturierung der Daten erfolgt mit einem speziell entwickelten Dateneditor.Aus dem Punkthaufen berechnet das System TASH über ein Dreiecksnetz oder direkt mittels gleitender Flächen ein Gitter ( DGM ).
Aus diesem Gitter leiten sich alle Folgeprodukte, wie Isolinien, Differenzen und Volumen, perspektive Darstellungen ( 3D-Ansichten ), Profile und Farbdarstellungen ab.

The actual modelling of the terrain is done in the TASH Data Editor.TASH computes a grid from the accumulated survey points using either triangulation or moving surfaces.
All of the derived products such as contour lines, differences and volumes, perspective views, profiles and coloured representations are obtained from this particular grid.
