Bislang trugen 12 Mainzer in der Antarktis zu Aufbau und Wartung des Experiments bei; zwei weitere Doktoranden werden Ende Dezember 2010 zum Südpol fliegen.

To date, 12 participants from Mainz have been involved in the construction and maintenance of the IceCube experiment; two additional postgraduates will be flying out to the South Pole in late December 2010.

www.uni-mainz.deAm 13. Mai 1989 erreichte er mit der ICEWALK Expedition nach 56 Tagen und rund 1000 Km den Geografischen Nordpol.
Im selben Jahr, am 30. Dezember, erreichte er auf Ski den Südpol.
Zugleich gelang ihm mit dem Alpinisten Reinhold Messner die erste komplette Durchquerung des antarktischen Kontinents in 92 Tagen.
www.arved-fuchs.deOn the 13th of May, 1898, the ICEWALK Expedition reached the geographical North Pole after 56 days and a distance of about 1.000 kilometers.
In the same year on December 30th, he reached the South Pole on skis.
At the same time he managed to completely cross the Antarctic continent with the alpinist Reinhold Messner in 92 days.
www.arved-fuchs.deDie Trossen sind in 125m Abstand voneinander angeordnet, sodass insgesamt ein Volumen von einem Kubikkilometer mit Lichtsensoren bestückt ist.
Der Südpol ist ein idealer Ort für dieses Projekt durch sein kristallklares Tiefeneis und durch die exzellente Infrastruktur, die die Amundsen-Scott-Station bietet.
Ausrüstungen und Personen werden von McMurdo, der amerikanischen Station am Rande der Antarktis, mit kufenbestückten Transportflugzeugen eingeflogen.
www.uni-mainz.deThe strings are arranged at 125-meter intervals, meaning light sensors are provided over a total volume of ice of one cubic kilometer.
The South Pole is an ideal location for this project because of its crystal-clear deep ice and the excellent infrastructure provided by the Amundsen-Scott Station.
Equipment and personnel are flown in from McMurdo, the American station at the edge of the Antarctic, on transport planes fitted with a ski undercarriage.

?Ich bin heuer schon am Südpol gestanden, habe im Winter im Altaigebirge in der Mongolei gedreht, aber das war mit Abstand das größte Abenteuer meines Lebens…? erzählt Regisseur Heinz Leger nach vier Monaten Dreharbeiten in Nepal und Tibet.
