Die Idee, den Kreis Mettmann unter der Marke neanderland kulturell und touristisch zu vermarkten, entstand Ende der 1990er Jahre in Anlehnung an den weltweit einzigartigen ersten Fundort des Neanderthalers – welcher bekanntermaßen mit dem modernen Menschen verwandt ist.
Im Kulturbereich wird die Marke neanderland bereits verstärkt genutzt und ist durch die von der Kreisverwaltung Mettmann initiierten Kulturprojekte „neanderland BIENNALE“ und „neanderland MUSEUMSNACHT“ am Markt etabliert.
Seit Anfang März 2013 präsentiert sich das neanderland nun auch als touristische Destination.
