In contrast, “ The House is Black ” ( 1962 ) is an impressive short film in grainy black and white visuals which provides an unabashed look at deformed faces and bodies in a leper colony.
The initial shock is soon followed by beauty: the uninterrupted scenes are accompanied by the off-screen voice of director Forough Farrokhzad – she reads excerpts from the Old Testament, the Qur ’ an and her own poems – and our attitudes regarding the wonder of human existence are surpassed.
