In the autumn of 1910 Schoeck took up work on the Violin Concerto op . 21.
Due to the motivic relationships between the individual movements, it comes close to a musical “ fantasia ” and demands a rich palette of finely graded timbres from the soloist.
The first complete performance of the Violin Concerto, with Schoeck on the piano, took place on 28 February 1912 in Berlin; about a month later, the work was heard in Bern in the version with orchestra.

In the second movement of the fantasia in F major a double transposition to f minor was inevitable since a transposition to d minor would have considerably distorted the movement by too many voice breaks.

Im Falle des zweiten Satzes der Fantasie F-Dur war dabei eine doppelte Transposition nach f-Moll erforderlich, da der Satz in d-Moll, das nach der ersten Transposition erreicht war, durch unvermeidliche Stimmknicke sehr entstellt worden wäre.

However, “ fantasia ” is not the designation of a musical genre, but rather expresses a basic intellectual attitude, a program.
This does not mean that it is “ program music ” in the proper sense – none of the four works display clear content-related links to a given program.

Aber „ Fantasie “ ist ja nun einmal keine musikalische Gattungsbezeichnung, sondern bringt eine geistige Grundhaltung, ein Programm zum Ausdruck.
Damit ist nicht gemeint, dass es sich im eigentlichen Sinn um „ Programmmusik “ handelt – keines der vier Werke weist klare inhaltliche Bezüge zu einem vorgegebenen Programm auf.
