Ohne die ungegenständliche Malerei der Jahrzehnte zuvor und damit die Aussagekraft der Abstraktion zu widerrufen, fand der Künstler im gegenständlichen Spätwerk eigene Antworten und gelangte damit über informelle Positionen hinaus.
Emil Schumacher starb im Oktober 1999 in seinem Haus auf Ibiza.
