For many years he has occupied himself with historical performance practice and the natural horn which he plays in such orchestras as the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra, Concerto Köln and the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.
Rainer Schmitz was born into a family of musicians and studied the French horn at the Munich Musikhochschule under his father, Professor Otto Schmitz.
He has been a member of the Bavarian State Orchestra as a high French horn player since 1981.

Rainer Schmitz wurde in einer Musikerfamilie geboren und studierte Horn an der Hochschule für Musik in München bei seinem Vater, Prof. Otto Schmitz.
Seit 1981 ist er als Hoher Hornist beim Bayerischen Staatsorchester engagiert.
